Do I have to go to the chiropractor forever?

It is a common misconception that chiropractors make patients come back over and over again simply as a tactic to boost revenue. Believe it or not, chiropractors want their patients to get healthier, feel great, and be able to reduce the frequency of their visits.  Many patients inquire how often they’ll have to come and when they can stop coming. We often follow this question up with how long do you want your nervous system to be free of interference?

Despite what many people think chiropractic care isn’t designed as a pain management procedure. While it is very effective for back pain and various other types of pain, it’s important to know that pain isn’t the only sign of a problem with your nervous system. Pain is often the last symptom to show up and the very first to go away. That means problems that result in pain are often problems long before you know about them. A chiropractor’s mission is to remove interference from the nervous system by adjusting the spine. The spine is what protects the nervous system and all of the nerves in your entire body pass through your spinal column. Besides pain, symptoms like fatigue, insomnia, allergies, decreased immune system, infertility, depression, and many others can all be a signal of a problem with your nervous system.

The true answer to how long you should see a chiropractor is simple — as long as you have a nervous system you should see a chiropractor. They are the only medical professionals educated to provide specific adjustments to the spine to remove interference from the nervous system. Stress, injuries, accidents, movement, and even just sleeping the wrong way can all cause your spine to be subluxated (misaligned, causing interference with your nervous system). Everyone from a new born baby to an elderly adult can get subluxated just from living normally. Of course many people come in with acute issues such as after a car accident or after a fall. In fact, many people never consider a chiropractor otherwise. But those incidents simply cause severe interference that most people can feel and thus they seek help for the symptoms. The truth is symptoms or not, there is no person walking around today that wouldn’t benefit from a visit to the chiropractor. To provide a little more perspective, ask yourself the following questions…

  • When you get a new car, how often do you get the oil changed? Once or regularly for the life of the vehicle? What would happen if you only changed your oil one time?
  • When you are trying to lose weight or maintain your weight, how often do you eat healthy foods? Once or consistently over several weeks, months, years, or ideally throughout your lifetime? What would happen if you only changed your diet one time?
  • How often do you brush your teeth? What would happen if you only brushed them once and never brushed them again?
  • How often do you mop your floor? Just when you spill something on it or regularly as part of a normal cleaning routine? What would happen if you only mopped it once?
  • Why do you do each of these things? Because there is something wrong or rather to prevent bigger problems from occurring?

You see when it comes to many things in our lives performing regular maintenance is completely normal and expected. We maintain our cars even if nothing is wrong, we brush our teeth even if we don’t have cavities, and we keep our houses clean even if they aren’t visibly dirty. So why is it so different when it comes to our bodies? Going to a chiropractor doesn’t mean you need to go every week for the rest of your life, although as a chiropractor that is what I do. However it does mean that every single day you are putting potential strain on your spine and to maintain optimal health and prevent illness you should see a chiropractor as part of regular maintenance. Why wait for symptoms to show up? That could be once a month, once a week, or even a few times a year depending on your health overall and the results you want to achieve.

If you waited until your car stopped running to take it in for service it would likely be much more costly and extensive than if you had taken it in for routine tune-ups. If you waited until your mouth was filled with cavities to go to the dentist, it would take much longer and much more money to get your mouth back in order. It’s the same with your nervous system. If you take care of it and keep it maintained, you’ll experience better health and prevent more major or costly issues in the future. If you wait until you are in pain and can’t move, expect that it will take longer and more visits to get it back to normal. If you are going to invest in your car, your teeth, and your home, be willing to invest in your health too.

Going to a chiropractor once and expecting to see results long term is like getting your oil changed once and expecting your car to run at peak performance for the life of the vehicle. Do you have to go to the chiropractor forever? Of course not, you don’t HAVE to brush your teeth forever either. The choice is up to you.
